Causes of warts

Warts are now known to be caused by an infection of the skin with the human papilloma virus. over a hundred different types of the human papilloma virus have been identified which can infect the skin and mucous membranes. The mucous membrane is tissue that lines the nose, throat, digestive tract, and other body openings such as anus and vagina. Different types of this HPV virus can cause different types of warts (i.e. certain types are known to cuase genital warts while others cause common warts, some strains of the virus have also been implicated in other conditions such as cancers).

Common warts can occur anywhere on the body, but are commonest on the hands and fingers. They generally appear as small hard lumps which are raised from the surface of the skin and become horny and knobbly in appearance.

Zantac for Wart Treatment and Removal

Many people have reported that using ranitidine (a generic form of Zantac) and other anti ulcer drugs like Tagamet have been effective in shrinking warts to the point where they are almost not noticeable at all. In fact even doctors are now prescribing liquid zantac for topical application as wart treatments. However the science behind this effect and the research to back up the use of Zantac, is lacking to say the least.

Several trials have been carried out with mixed results. Some earlier trials seemed to show good evidence that anti ulcer drugs did have a profound effect on shrinking warts, however later trials showed no effect whatsoever. It is also worth noting that no information exists on the safety of using anti ulcer drugs on the skin as this is not the usage they were designed for.

At present then, the main evidence for the effectiveness of Zantac and other anti ulcer treatments seems to be mostly anecdotal and it certainly seems to have produced results for many if the posts seen on many online forums are anything to go by.

Planters wart treatment and pain relief

Because of the (sometimes extreme) discomfort associated with plantar warts, removing them is the best course of action. Be aware however that many home treatments purchased over the counter can take some time to work ( usually weeks or months). However there things you can do in the meantime to reduce pain. try purchasing a doughnut or ring bandage/plaster from local chemist or drugstore, this will take some of the pressure off the wart while you are on your feet. Also try your best to keep feet dry and clean, change socks at least daily and try medicated foot powders to keep then fresh.

There are home treatments you can try that are usually applied directly to the wart. The most well known of these is Salicylic acid ( although it comes under various brand names) . As mentioned above the downside to these treatments is the timescales, don't be surprised if you need to carry out daily treatments at home for months before wart is gone!

Doctors of course have much faster treatment methods available for removing planter warts, including acid treatments, laser therapy and cryotherapy.
